Originally debuting at the Winter/Fall 2023 Men’s Show at Paris Fashion Week, the multi-talented musician Bakar dropped a new music video for his single “Good News” on March 7th. The track itself has a comfy, somewhat pleading feel, switching back and forth between “This feels like good news/Just to be with you” and “How hard is it to make time?/Huh?”
Over soft guitar and reversed synth, "Good News" is a perfect late summer night vibe for Indie-pop enthusiasts, but if pop isn’t your thing I’ve got Good News for you (ha). I know I’m late to the memo on this, but this guy makes like twelve different kinds of music, and it’s all great. You want rap? Listen to Badkid. Pop? 1st Time. Punk rock? Dracula. Maybe something with a jazzy feel? “Hell N Back.” Hardcore, experimental, post-punk, and hip-hop in the verse, with soul in the chorus? BADlands.
I could keep going, but Bakar’s style goes well beyond “genre-bending” status, it’s just really good. For one, his voice has so much range that half the time it sounds like two different artists on the same song. BADlands is a great example of this, coming from near screaming on “I say, 'Fuck the Queen,' tell me if it's treason” to the verse with soft, Leon Bridges-type vocals, “It's all in your head, so just get out of bed/And do something instead of just wastin' your time.” If there’s something Bakar can’t do well, he hasn’t found it yet.
