Automatic - Turn Away

Updated: Apr 26, 2023

Los Angeles post-punk group Automatic put out a new music video for their track, Turn Away, on January 9th, 2023. Originally released as part of Automatic’s 2022 album Excess, Turn Away stays true to the trio’s distinct style, with essential riot-grrrl vocals over a bass-and-synth-heavy backing plus punk, psych-rock, and shoegaze influences.

Excess and their 2019 debut album Signal are simultaneously nostalgic and fresh. Heavier, more energetic tracks like "Too Much Money” sound at home alongside Bikini Kill or The Go-Go’s, which makes sense given that The Go-Go’s track “Automatic” is their namesake, while poppier tunes could reasonably be compared to Beach House. That being said, Automatic is by no means derivative - while taking cues from all-female rock groups of the past, their music is hauntingly minimalistic, replacing the typical aggression of punk with bitter satire, like “I Love You, Fine” off of Signal, which feels exactly like a skater girl calling you a dumbass before telling you to get in bed.

The music video for “Turn Away” depicts its members waking up following a plane crash, gradually collecting themselves and, despite torn clothes and bloodied faces, taking the time to pose elegantly and straight into the camera with just the right amount of condescension. Just like its accompanying track, this video is delightfully simple - you won’t find blindingly quick solos or busy production here (or really anywhere in their discography), but there is an undeniable appeal to Automatic’s resentful, rebellious style.
