Asheville, NC-based artist Angel Olsen released a new lyric video, “Forever Means,” off of her recent EP by the same name. “Forever Means,” much like her 2011 album Strange Cacti, is purely, potently nostalgic - like it’s always been around, comfortably at home next to classics like Etta James’ “At Last” and “Over the Rainbow.” The slightest hints of punk influence bleed through this delicate ballad, and home-movie style footage of Olsen driving through a scenic mountain view is a lovely accompaniment.
Given that the unforgettable Strange Cacti was Olsen’s debut project, it feels only fair that she would continue to produce the soul-rearranging kind of music that is her genius. And she has - after joining folk-punk icon Bonnie Prince Billy in 2010 as his backing vocalist, Olsen went on to establish herself as a solo artist drawing from folk, punk, and pop, redefining her sound and herself with every release. Every musician is naturally bound to improve over the years as they grow closer and closer towards their vision, but whereas most artists seem to one-up themselves with new projects, Olsen’s discography is so good front to back that it feels more like she’s simply discovering new facets of her own talent. Maybe I’m going overboard, but maybe not - if you’re skeptical, listen to “Some Things Cosmic,” “Shut Up Kiss Me,” and “White Fire.” And of course, watch and listen to “Forever Means.”
